ATHLETTIX
ABOUT
The Athlettix application creates an efficient platform that allows gym members to strategize their workout routines to stay away from loss of time and avoid gyms losing their members due to unorganization
MY ROLE
UX Researcher, UI Designer
OUTCOME
Increased gym traffic in an organized and efficient manner for both, veteran and new gym goers
RESEARCH & DISCOVERY
THE PROBLEM
Overly-packed gyms can negatively impact a person's workout routine. When a gym is too crowded, people tend to spend too much time on one set of equipment. This results into longer wait times and overall incomplete workout sessions. Unsuccessful workout sessions accumulate and result in consequences such as gyms losing memberships, leaving everyone unhappy.
The competitive analysis exposes how gyms do not focus on a significant problem and what they lack, which affects many gym-goers ranging from veteran gym-goers all the way to newbies.
USER INTERVIEWS
10 Interviews were conducted to understand users’ experiences, habits, and routines when attending the gym. The goal of the research was to understand if there was a trend of frustrations and barriers that get in the way of efficient workout sessions, what they are, and how they form to begin with. Based on user testing, it was distinguished how often people have similar struggles within the gym since there are no forms of organization for the equipment, and is based on first come-first serve.
These interview questions helped shape the end-to-end application design by highlighting important concerns from gym-goers
SURVEY RESULTS
10 interviews helped develop user personas. It was created to visualize the points at which users most commonly encountered points of confusion or frustration when searching for upcoming artist concerts or festivals. It helped determine which areas of the existing platform could be improved on.
USER PERSONAS
Focusing on these interviewees' concerns is what helped focus on creating the Athlettix end-to-end application. These user personas highlighted what user testers discussed during their interviews:
INFORMATION STRUCTURE
TASK FLOWS
This task flow diagram represents a user's journey through several different examples within the Athlettix application. Instead of viewing a single piece of content in isolation, these flows show the functionality of how Athlettix gives users the ability to search and select their favorite gyms, find open reservable equipment per gym, and view queue times per equipment. This allows users to plan their routine ahead of time.
WIREFRAMES
The initial focus with the wireframes was creating a simple sign-in or onboarding process. Including features to find local gyms in the area and save them as profile favorites. Upon entry, the homescreen would provide quick access to reservable equipment within the favorited gym(s). Most importantly, the home screen offers available equipment based on what muscle group the user would like to work on.
The focus then turned to the UI- on how to best present workout machines per muscle group for both veteran and newbies at the gym, hence the interactive 3D figure was implemented.

DESIGN
The creation of the business’ brand, including the color palette, typeface, and logo, was completed to better represent the values of Athlettix. The logo consists of a shape that previews the letters "A" and "X" together to create a sharp modern look. The colors were chosen to be neutral since that best fits with modern gyms.
FINAL PRODUCT
PROTOTYPE RESULTS
A total of 10 test users were recruited to test the Athlettix end-to-end application. They were tasked with registering and going through the onboarding process to create an account, find and favor a local gym, select a muscle group to work on using the 3D figure, and finally reserve an available piece of equipment.
Results:
-
100% of users completed each of the tasks
-
100% of users completed all of the tasks in 1 minute & 30 seconds or less
-
100% of users self-corrected/problem-solved any issues encountered
-
70% of users suggested color-coding the reservation timers
-
100% of user preferred the 3D humanoid with 360 degree scrolling over the 2D humanoid
FEEDBACK AND ITERATIONS
Changes were made to the original design based on feedback given by users.
User Feedback:
The reservation icon for machine usage was hard to distinguish due to them being circles instead of a timer
Iteration:
Added Color-coded timers for the reservations per each machine. Green means available, while Red means currently in use
Quoute:
"I like that it has a color-coded timer so I know when its available at first glance"

User Feedback:
The body figure was originally just a front view on display while presenting both front and back muscle group names
Iteration:
The humanoid figure became an interactive 3D model that presents both planes of the body by scrolling 360 degrees without the confusing overlay
Quote:
"Why can't I see the back muscles on the figure, yet the names are there? I would like for it to point to the specific part of the back so I know what to work on"

CONCLUSION
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Visual communication is key to an organized gym
-
Creating a queue system with color-coded timers creates an easy pattern for users to work together with and reduce the amount of stress from first-come, first-serve packed gyms. Athlettix is able to provide those tools in the comfort of a user's phone
FUTURE STEPS
Features to develop or improve on, given the time and resources:
-
Create a section that allows a user to favorite specific machines and organize them into their own muscle/workout categories
-
Messaging system to form connections and share workout plans or gyms with fellow gym goers
